With thousands of wooden posts, shafts containing ritual artefacts, and sun portals, the Pömmelte ring sanctuary (Ringheiligtum) offers an impressive reconstruction of the worldview during prehistoric times.

Is it a three-dimensional calendar, sacrificial site or burial ground? The Pömmelte ring sanctuary (Ringheiligtum Pömmelte) was built at the same time as Stonehenge, over 4,000 years ago. It had the same dimensions and was created by the same cultures. It was not a place for everyday life, but a monumental sanctuary. With a 115-metre diameter, it consists of seven concentric rings of ditches, posts and ramparts. Within deep shafts, archaeologists have uncovered shattered pottery, animal bones – and human skulls.

Two of the complex’s gates are aligned exactly with the solstices. For over 300 years, different cultures used this site during the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. The complex itself, along with the sacrificial offerings found here, provide an impressive insight into the beliefs of the prehistoric world. Today, you can stand right in the midst of it all and experience a reconstruction of the former “Woodhenge”. The Salzlandmuseum in Schönebeck (Elbe) has an exhibition dedicated to the site with original artefacts. There’s also an information centre for visitors at the ring sanctuary.
