Site of the Sky Disc with an observation tower: A glimpse into the Bronze Age

An der Steinklöbe 16, 06642 Nebra (Unstrut)

Archaeological Site

The Mittelberg near Nebra, where the Nebra Sky Disk was buried over 3,600 years ago, is a significant archaeological site. The discovery of this bronze disk, considered one of the oldest depictions of the cosmos, has expanded our understanding of the Bronze Age. Today, a 30-meter-high observation tower rising above the trees offers a chance to experience the view of the horizon much as it was back then. The tower is oriented north-south and serves as a landmark. At the discovery site itself, the “Eye of the Sky”—a polished stainless-steel disc set into the ground—marks the exact spot where the disc was found. The “Eye of the Sky” reflects the sky, thus creating a symbolic connection between heaven and earth. The site is surrounded by a reconstructed Iron Age rampart, which complements the historical context. A hiking trail leads through the Ziegelroda Forest to the discovery site, which is considered ecologically valuable due to its old oak trees. The view from the observation tower and the historical information provide visitors with an opportunity to view the landscape and the significance of the site from a new perspective.
