Tradition and Customs

In order to preserve the local identity of Sachsen-Anhalt state, many local associations are working to embed old customs and celebrations in public awareness.

Probably the most well known celebration takes place at night on May 1st. In more than thirty locations in Harz the traditional “Walpurgis Festival” is celebrated on this night, among them in Sachsen-Anhalt, Wernigerode, Blankenburg, Schierke as well as on the incredible “Witches’ Dancing Square” in Thale. Guests should combine the visit to the “Walpurgis Celebration” on April 30th with a brief visit to Harz mountains.

Also the regional kitchen belongs to tradition and customs. Typical dishes in Sachsen-Anhalt are the Harz cheese and the wild game dishes from Harz, the “Halloren Balls” from Halle, the “Baumkuchen” as well as the Wikana cookies from the Luther City of Wittenberg. The most well known brand from Sachsen-Anhalt is the sparkling wine “Rotkäppchen”.

Vacationer or weekenders in Sachsen-Anhalt should not miss out on trying the specialities from the regional kitchen. Typical regional dishes – prepared with ingredients from the region – are on the menus in many restaurants between Arendsee in the north and Zeitz in the south of Sachsen-Anhalt.
